Blame it on the beach

First post and so much to say. I didn’t get this blog up and running as quickly as planned, but that’s OK. The beaches, beautiful Cape Cod weather and work have kept me busy since I arrived at the beginning of June

So what have I been doing since I got here? Well I started by getting settled in my new house. It’s a huge, old house in Yarmouthport with a ton of character. It sits off a back road that looks like it was taken straight from a movie. The architecture around here has a strict New England feel to it. Here are a couple looks at mi casa.

My room is the window on the right. You can see the house just seems to keep going. It\'s huge, and I still get lost inside sometimes.

View of the house from the side.

I have a room and bathroom to myself here and share the rest of the house with Victoria, who works at the paper, and her boyfriend Tommy. Victoria went to UK and worked at the student newspaper, the Kentucky Kernel, back in the day, so we have that in common. Woohoo go Kernel. Here are a few shots of my room.

I have lots of closet space!

Simple and sweet and easy to keep clean.

I hear there are seven or eight other interns all in different departments. I’ve met two of them so far, but we work different schedules so it’s been hard to really get to know them. Supposedly there is going to be a meet and greet over bagels one of these days, but July is just around the corner and still no word on the intern gathering.

Here’s a picture of the newspaper building. It’s located in Hyannis on the best street in the whole town. We’re right in the middle of all the action.

I’ve been thinking about all of my journalism experience up to this point. I spent a lot of time the Kernel, where I worked harder than I’ve ever worked. And then there was Cincinnati last summer where I learned so much and had such a good time reporting for a professional newspaper. Cape Cod is a long way from Lexington and Cincinnati, but I have a feeling the experiences will fit nicely together in my ever-growing cache of journalistic knowledge.

I’m beefing up my copy editing skills this summer. That basically means I am reading stories, checking all of the facts and figures, re-writing things that I think could be written better, writing headlines and working with the online version of the newspaper. Many people think of copy editing as a less-than-glamorous job. And they’re right. You’re not writing original stories so you don’t get a byline in the paper. But that doesn’t mean the work is any less important. In a newsroom, every entity must work together cohesively if the final product is going to be worth reading. That’s why I’m confident that this internship will prepare me for whatever I decide to do once I start looking for an actual job.

Stay tuned. I’ll be playing catch-up for a while with the blog because I’ve already had so many exciting adventures all across the Cape. But now that I have this thing up and running, I should be posting more frequently.
